Pooplist 2001

Kathena Hasbrouck

Every year, it's the same thing. The contributors to the grand tradition of Poop List-dom are witty, brilliant and entertaining in their recounting of the previous year's offerings. Every year, funny things are said, insightful comments made. This year is obviously no different. The only thing different is me. I'm here to provide my list as-is. There won't be any embellishments or crazy phrase dropping. Names, thoughts, words. That's it. To the point and without the usual brouhaha.
Joy.
As per usual, my list won't descend in order from greatest to worst, but in whatever order I've managed to pull them from my memory.

Music
1. OST - Moulin Rouge -  - Long live the musical.
2. OST - Amelie -  Whimsical and naive...the way I'd like to be sometimes.
2. Saves the Day - Stay What You Are -  Catchy, catchy, catchy.
b3. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells -  Good noise for a good time.
4. Gillian Welch - Time (the Revelator) -  Captures darkness and beauty over the course of 10 songs.
5. Low - Things We Lost in the Fire -  Soft, mesmerizing songs to listen to quietly. By yourself.
6. lda - The Braille Night -  Some people thought this was too dark for Ida...I say, sometimes you need to be happy, sometimes you need to be sad.
7. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American -  Emo-core for the next geneiation. Who can't help but love "Authority Song?"
8. The Donnas - Turn 21 -  Another round on rock n'roll's roller coaster.
9. Death Cab for Cutie - The Photo Album -  Brilliant.
10. The Blake Babies - God Bless the Blake Babies -  Reunions can be a good thing.
11. Built to Spill - Ancient Memories of the Future -  Guitar rock that you can hop to.
12. Alkaline Trio - From Here to lnfumaiy -  Just the right amount of power and pop.
13. Snow Patrol - When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up -  Indiepop a la Belle and Sebastie~.but different.
14. Modest Mouse - Everywhere and his Nasty Parlor Tricks -  "You're the Good Things" is one of my favorite songs of the year. Woohoo.
15. K. - New Problems -  Karia from Ida ventures into solo waters - and floats gracefully!
16. Rufus Wainwright - Poses -  Songwriting troubadour. What a voice.
17. Edith Frost - Wonder Wonder -  She sounds like Liz Phair on a song or two, but hey! I love Liz Phair. And Edith Frost..
18. Hope Sandoval and the Wann lnventions - Bavarian Fruit Bread -  The same quiet crooning we loved from Mazzy Star, but not so spacey.
19. New End OriginalThriller -  Foot-tapping, air-guitar provoking goodness.
20. They Might be Giants - Mink Car -  We all like quirk. The Johns deliver.
